  15. Inside Europe: The EU looks beyond its borders to promote stability
  16. 8 Sep 2007 at 7:05am
    Listen
Your Podscope hit is at 41:58 On Monday, the European Union signalled its resolve to promote prosperity and stability outside its borders by holding the inaugural conference of the so-called European Neighbourhood Policy or ENP. Established in 2004, the ENP aims to increase political and economic co-operation with 16 neighbouring countries and territories in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and around the Mediterranean. But as Eric Heath reports, there are differing views as to the aims and merits of the ENP.EU membership ? what?s in it for Ukraine?Next week officials from the European Commission will be holding talks in one ENP country, Ukraine, on closer integration. The EU insists that its European Neighbourhood Policy is not connected to the bloc?s enlargement. But Roman Shpek, Ukraine?s Ambassador to the EU, says his country is seeking full membership of the EU. It?s nearly three years since Ukraine?s Orange Revolution, which was heralded as a victory for the country?s pro-western forces. But instead of economic and political reforms the country has experienced political deadlock and constitutional uncertainty. And as Guy Degen reports from Kyiv, opinions vary widely over how the country's relationship with Brussels is evolving.Discontent within the Roman Catholic Church?Pope Benedict the 16th is in Austria this weekend - the first papal visit to the country since his predecessor John Paul II was there almost ten years ago. The Pope is visiting the Alpine town of Mariazell, a major place of pilgrimage for Catholics - and tens of thousands have gathered there to hear him speak. But as Kerry Skyring reports, many Austrians are unhappy with the Pope, and the Church, and upset because they can't deliver their message directly.Rugby fans from around the world converge on FranceAccording to the bookies, France is the Northern hemisphere?s best bet for the rugby world cup which kicked off on Friday. And it?s France that?s hosting the competition this time round. Not bad going for a nation which ? with the exception of the rugby-mad south-west of the country - doesn?t really play the sport at all. John Laurenson reports from Bayonne in the French Basque country on that quirk of history - le ?rugby francais?.Why Italians plan to boycott pasta for a dayThe Italians love their pasta. It?s estimated that each person there consumes 54 kilos annually. But next Thursday the Italians will be boycotting pasta for a day. Why? To protest at spiralling prices. Because of a global push for environmentally-friendly bio-fuels, the price of grains is skyrocketing. Pasta -loving Italians are especially impacted by the price hikes. For centuries they?ve been major consumers of a special kind of hard wheat that makes their spaghetti taste so good. Megan Williams reports from Rome. Are pensioners key to Germany?s retail future?Hypermarkets or big-box stores, as they?re also known, have become a common feature on the retail landscape, especially outside big cities. Stores like Wal-Mart and Target offer one-stop shopping for just about every consumer need. But what about grandma and grandpa's needs? Here in Germany, the country's first big specialty retail store for the graying set offers the over-60 crowd products that fit their stage of life. And since Germany's population is aging rapidly, it?s a concept that marketers say has a bright future. Kyle James reports.Northern Ireland - Europe?s newest must-see destinationFor decades Northern Ireland has been associated with bombs and bullets, sectarian conflict and an endless peace process. But today in the province the buzzwords are "the peace dividend". Since May, former enemies have been sharing power in the province. And another milestone was reached in August when the British army officially ended its military operation there. It means Northern Ireland is firmly on the path to normality and proof of that is the increase in tourists from abroad. Sue Ward is the Director of Marketing for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and she told me more about Europe?s newest tourism hotspot. Why people are travelling half way around the world to get their kit off? This week in Europe:Terra Incognita we?re heading off to the beach in the south of France. This is where our reporter William Brougham has just decided to take a holiday. But it?s a destination with a difference: where it?s not so much what you wear that?s important but what you don?t wear. William?s been letting it all hang out in the Cap D?Agde and here?s his explanation why.
