pBands like bHellsingland Underground/b frustrate me. On one hand, I can totally understand why a bunch of Swedes would want to start a Southern boogie-rock band ala bLynyrd Skynyrd/b or the bAllman Bros/b. I bet they have a great time doing it and I imagine that local audiences lap it up. But why record a full album? Do they really think they'll appeal to a more widespread audience? At least the single i"Northern country boy"/i attempts to redress the usual redneck clichés according to the band's true origins, but I'm still left thinking i"so what?"/i Is it because I feel like they could do so much more with it? Or maybe it's because the music simply isn't all that great. I know this stuff is supposed to have a laidback feel, but they've crossed over the line to tepid. Perhaps they should indulge in a bit more of that a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonshine" target="_blank"hembränt/a and weed they're talking about in order to loosen up. Disappointing./p

pLI a href="http://www.stereogum.com/okx/"OKX/a alumni Northern State had Le Tigre calendar star JD Sampson do a revved remix of iCan I Keep This Pen's/i's iGrey's Anatomy/i-a href="http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.viewfriendID=6667117blogID=32 2007023"approved/a first single "Better Already," lowering the guitar riffs and adding layers of percussive ricochet to the deal. The hallucinogenic a href="/archives/video/new-northern-state-video-better-already.html"video/a for the song's original state was all about butterflies, friendship, and L7 melodies. Under JD's watch you still get the melody, but it pops and locks amid space synths, break beats, bass thumps, and one hella dose of LCD cowbell. /ppimg src="/img/northern_state-jd_sampson1.jpg"nbsp;img src="/img/northern_state-jd_sampson2.jpg"/img/img/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=utZdNcB"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=utZdNcB" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=k5RdeAb"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=k5RdeAb" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=zxjEcWb"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=zxjEcWb" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=RkPYiHB"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=RkPYiHB" border="0"/img/a /div

For starters, Tegan has a forthcoming solo "electronic-based" project with AFI's Hunter Burgan, who played bass on emThe Con/em. As far as we can tell from this quote, it seems to be in the very early stages. They've been touring for like the last ten years, so that's understandable. Via a href="http://www.spinner.com/2008/03/04/tegan-and-saras-tegan-quin-launches-side-proj ect/"Spinner/a:blockquote"We don't actually have a name, which is kind of funny ... We wanted to call it Tegan vs. Hunter but we both have projects and bands, obviously, with our names already. So we were kind of like, 'I don't know what we're going to call it.' We're slowly working on a record. I'm really inspired by it, but it's hard to get it done in between tours."/blockquoteIn other TS news, the sisters have been doing a series of videos ("Backstage Bilingual") on their current UK/European tour, where they talk to random audience members backstage about local slang, customs, etc. The first one was kind of a wash, but the three following installments yielded pretty amazing moments, including someone saying, "I'm so hungry I could eat the balls off a low-flying duck." Yeah, things get really good once they head into Ireland.../pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=0WEI01F"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=0WEI01F" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=za3O19f"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=za3O19f" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=CvMIFVf"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=CvMIFVf" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=ALjqNbF"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=ALjqNbF" border="0"/img/a /div

  29. 5 Questions With Loch Lomond

Upon revisiting emstrongPaper Thin Walls/strong/em over the course of a long journey home today, it sounds just as good as I remember it. Actually, it sounds better. We caught up with them for our continuing a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/category/all/5-questions-wmob/"5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees/a feature./p pstrongCould you lend some information on the recording process of emPaper The Walls/em? Where and how was it recorded, and were there any lessons learned that you#8217;ll apply towards future recording sessions?/strong/p pPaper The Walls was recorded in two parts, the first being an almost completely live recording at a href="http://www.typefoundrystudio.com/"Type Foundry Studios/a (Portland, OR) by Adam Selzer (a href="http://www.norfolkandwestern.org/"Norfolk #038; Western/a, a href="http://www.mwardmusic.com/"M Ward/a) and the second half was done in Camas, WA By Skyler Norwood at a href="http://www.myspace.com/miraclelake"Miracle Lake Studios/a. I feel that we#8217;ve learned a great deal from making this record. We have been blessed with people loving our live shows but at the same time cursed by those same people being disappointed in previous recording quality./p pThey want it to reflect the energy and subtly of our live performance. Recording almost totally live gave us a sound that more accurately reflects what we can do live. We#8217;re very proud of Paper The Walls for that reason./p pstrongI heard you just finished up a cover of Led Zeppelin#8217;s #8220;Kashmir#8221; for an upcoming Zep compilation. How did that come about and was that tune your first choice?/strong/p pI#8217;m actually not very fond of a href="http://www.ledzeppelin.com/"Led Zeppelin/a. I worked at a furniture factory in high School; it was dark and depressing and full of toxins. The only thing we were allowed to listen to was the classic rock station out of Bend, OR. Central Oregon#8217;s version of classic rock was Led Zeppelin, followed by more Led Zeppelin, followed by #8220;Let#8217;s keep the Led out!#8221; I got so fucking tired of that band. What I do love is Rob Jones (a href="http://www.jealousbutcher.com/"Jealous Butcher Records/a). He is an amazing human being. He made this a fun project for us, getting Chris Funk (a href="http://www.decemberists.com/"The Decemberists/a, Flash Hawk Parlour) to come in and record some really great, odd stuff. Rob also is having a href="http://www.barsuk.com/bands/chriswalla"Chris Walla/a mix it. We obviously could not refuse to work with such great talent. In the end, we really love our version of Kashmir. But just our version./p pstrongThe Portland music scene seems to be thriving right now, with a lot of solid groups calling the city home. What#8217;s your perspective on the scene and the direction it#8217;s going?/strong/p pI would say that Portland#8217;s music scene is great and only getting better. There is virtually no #8220;music industry#8221; here so the competition is more about being more creative and much more friendly. A band must leave Portland to accomplish anything on a national or global scale./p pWhen they return they are considered more ambassadors rather than a target of competition. I love this about Portland, we all love and help each other immensely./p pstrongThe internet has dramatically altered the way artists can reach an audience. With things like blogs/myspace/etc, what are your thoughts on the power of the internet in terms of helping (or hurting) your music?/strong/p pIt has only helped us. The impact of the internet on music and culture in general over the past five years has no comparison is human history. However, I certainly believe you can hype something all you want, but at the end of the day all the hype must hold water in order to really reach people. I say, use the internet as a tool but don#8217;t lose sight of the fact that the music you are creating is the most important thing./p pstrongIf you were a music writer/blogger for a week, covering only bands and records you loved, who and what albums would you write about?/strong/p pWell I am not a blogger, not because I don#8217;t love reading blogs but there is a special type of person for these things. Such great research and thought are put into my favorite blogs. I don#8217;t have the patience for these things. If I were to suspend my ADD and just do it I would write about and LOVE to do interviews with a href="http://www.americanmary.com"The National/a, a href="http://www.portobrien.com/"Port O#8217;Brien/a, a href="http://www.myspace.com/runonsentencemusic"Run On Sentence/a, a href="http://www.hushrecords.com/?page_id=224"Rauellson/a, a href="http://www.myspace.com/robertwyatt"Robert Wyatt/a and a href="http://www.subtle6.com/"Subtle/a./p pstrongPreviously from Portland:/strong/p pstrongMoB:/strong a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/2008/01/24/5-questions-with-weinland-we-like-la-lam entor/"5 Questions With Weinland / We Like: La Lamentor/abr / strongMoB:/strong a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/2007/09/18/5-questions-with-horse-feathers/"5 Questions with Horse Feathers/abr / strongMoB:/strong a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/2007/09/17/5-questions-with-johanna-kunin/"5 Questions with Johanna Kunin/abr / strongMoB:/strong a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/2006/11/14/5-questions-with-norfolk-western/"5 Questions with Norfolk #038; Western/abr / +++br / strongMyspace:/strong a href="http://myspace.com/lochlomond06"Loch Lomond/abr / strongMP3:/strong a href="http://www.greenlightgopublicity.com/clients/content/lochlomond/audio_download/ northern_knees_trees_and_lights.mp3"Loch Lomond - #8220;Northern, Knees, Trees, and Lights#8221;/abr / strongMP3:/strong a href="http://www.greenlightgopublicity.com/clients/content/lochlomond/audio_download/ song_in_3_4.mp3"Loch Lomond - #8220;Songs in 3/4#8243;/abr / strongMP3:/strong a href="http://www.greenlightgopublicity.com/clients/content/lochlomond/audio_download/ witchy.mp3"Loch Lomond - #8220;Witchy#8221;/a/p

I#8217;ve tried to keep it nice and warm once again#8230; I feel that#8217;s the only thing that helps my mood now a days./p div align="right"Image: Lotus Buds/div p align="right"

Authorities in Tamworth, 600 kilometers northwest of Sydney, had earlier said [that] African migrants were troublemakers and could carry diseases. The town council has said [that] it will now help Sudanese families settle in Tamworth, which is preparing to host its famous country music festival. From Sydney, Phil Mercer reports./em/p pThe mayor of Tamworth, James Treloar, says [that] the town council now will accept more refugees from Sudan./p pLast month he insisted that African migrants could cause trouble in the city and bring with them diseases such as tuberculosis and polio./p pThe council also argued [that] it did not have the resources to cope with potentially traumatized people who had fled civil unrest in southern Sudan./p pSo councilors rejected a request from Australia's [immigration department] to resettle five Sudanese families./p pThe decision caused dismay and anger. It prompted an emergency council debate in Tamworth and public pressure has helped to bring about this U-turn./p pTreloar now says [that] the plan can work but only if the federal government and local community are willing help./p pstrongquot; The program needs adjustment, needs modification to suit certain areas. We're hoping that that modification can be made to suit Tamworth and what we're particularly saying is[that] people who have signed petitions, who've put letters forward now need to become volunteers to make the program work, quot; said Treloar./strong/p pstrongAustralian immigration officials now will head to Tamworth to help the city prepare to welcome five Sudanese families as part of a one-year pilot program./strong/p pMany residents were horrified that their prosperous city should be portrayed as so mean-spirited. /p pTamworth is the capital of Australia's country music. Its annual music festival starts this week and there were fears that the refugee debate would overshadow this famous event, which draws tens of thousands of visitors./p pTamworth is already home to about 25 Sudanese. They arrived a year ago under a separate resettlement program. Most work in slaughterhouses, doing jobs that many long-time residents are not willing to do./p pstrongThe Australian government is resettling more refugees from Sudan than from any other country including Iraq and Afghanistan. Last year more than 3,700 Sudanese arrived out of a total intake of 14,000 refugees./strong /p pema href="http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,,2-10-1462_2056175,00.html"From AFP/a.../em/p pAn Australian country town has reversed its refusal to resettle five Sudanese refugee families after being accused of racism and fearing the Africans because they are quot;tall and blackquot;. /p pThe city council of Tamworth in northern New South Wales state decided at a special meeting on Tuesday night to accept the families under the government's Humanitarian Refugee Resettlement Programme. /p pThe nine councillors voted eight to one to welcome the refugees after voting six to three against them just last month, with mayor James Treloar saying at the time [that] he was concerned about crime and disease. /p pTamworth already had a population of 25 Sudanese who arrived about a year ago to look for work, and two councillors who pressed for the new vote said ignorance led to the initial rejection of the five refugee families. /p pu'Blacks frighten Aussies'/u /p pCouncillor Warren Woodly said: quot; It's fear that's behind this.quot; /p pHe said the Sudanese people were quot;striking to look at, very tall, very black, and the first time you see them you do go, boing! But, it's a credit to the human race, they are so striking.quot; /p pCouncillor and publican Robert Schofield agreed, saying: quot;People are frightened of them because they are tall and black. /p pquot;I tell them, I've got a mate in Noosa, a dark guy, real tall, one of those Masai, and just lovely. And I tell them, this is the best country in the world and we ought to be sharing it.quot; /p pImmigration minister Amanda Vanstone welcomed the council's decision to accept the refugee families. /p p[She] said: quot;Australia does have a big heart and you find a good portion of that in rural Australia.[quot;] More than 3 500 refugees from civil war-torn Sudan were settled in Australia last year./p pema href="http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Tamworth-push-for-refugee-responsibility/20 07/01/17/1168709825865.html"From AAP/a.../em/p pA northern NSW [New South Wales] council has backed down on its decision not to accept Sudanese refugees, but is urging the federal government to cut the bureaucracy and make the community responsible for the new arrivals./p pTamworth council on Tuesday night [Australian time] voted to overturn a ban on Sudanese refugees settling in the area, after its initial decision drew widespread condemnation./p pAt a meeting on Tuesday night, the council voted to trial the resettlement program by accepting up to five refugee families on condition a local not-for-profit group be allowed to manage their resettlement./p pNormal immigration policy would mean [that] a government-funded agency would be responsible for the refugees./p pThe federal government pledged to work closely with the council and plans to send a high-level immigration department delegation to the area./p pstrongquot; We want to work out something that works for Tamworth and it works for us, and that importantly works for the refugees who go there, quot; Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said./strong/p pstrongSudanese community leader Malur Shagog said [that] the backflip had placated the town's existing Sudanese residents./strong/p pstrongquot; After the decision was taken by the council and afterwards given to our community, they feel happy and they would say, 'There's no problem',quot; Mr Shagog said./strong/p pMayor James Treloar has slammed the media for branding his town racist and said [that] he had initially opposed the resettlement based on personal research into the program's failures./p pstrongCr [Councillor] Treloar had been criticised after he referred to local Sudanese residents who were charged with driving offences and one with sexual assault./strong/p pstrongquot;Criticism to me personally I can handle because maybe I haven't acted perfectly in this whole debate, quot; Cr Treloar said./strong/p pstrongquot; But criticism of the city has been very unfair.quot;/strong/p pCr Treloar said [that] community management of the refugee resettlement program would ensure [that] all the money was spent on refugees rather than administration costs./p pstrongRefugee advocate Marion Le said [that] she hoped [that] the controversy would prompt the government to recognise the failure of funding agencies from outside the community to manage the refugees./strong/p pstrongNew arrivals are only accompanied to sign up for Medicare and Centrelink, and sometimes to the local school to enrol their children, she said./strong/p pstrongquot;Beyond that they (the funded groups) don't do anything and when you are bringing people in from overseas from situations of trauma you need a lot more than that, quot; Ms Le said./strong/p pstrongquot; You need someone they can count on immediately as their friend and as a link to the wider community.quot;/strong/p pstrongMr Shagog said [that] he expected the resettled families to be happy in Tamworth./strong/p pstrongThe availability of manual work and less overcrowding than in the cities made the town an attractive place for Sudanese people, he said./strong/p pstrongquot; We are rural area people ... that's why the people move to Tamworth because it looks like back home, quot; Mr Shagog said./strong/p pa href="http://www.skynews.com.au/story.asp?id=150055"emFrom Sky News Australia/em/aem.../em/p pThe Federal Government says [that] it's looking forward to working with the regional New South Wales Council of Tamworth, which has decided to accept Sudanese refugees.br /br /The council drew widespread condemnation from refugee rights groups when it previously decided to ban five families from settling in the area.br /br /Tamworth Council says [that] it will now allow refugees to move into the area under its own pilot program.br /br /The program will be run by local non-government organisations and will be reviewed in 12 months.br /br /The council says [that] the number of refugee families that will settle in the town under the program will depend on resources.br /br /It will seek immediate talks with the Immigration Department to discuss funding concerns it has with the Federal Government scheme./p pema href="http://news.monstersandcritics.com/africa/news/article_1247689.php/Australian_t ownsfolk_accused_of_racism_think_again"From DPA/a.../em/p pAn Australian town council accused of pandering to racist sentiment by turning away a group of would-be residents from Sudan has reversed its controversial decision and will now accept the government-sponsored refugees. /p pThe federal government on Wednesday welcomed the change of heart that will see five Sudanese families settle in Tamworth in the continent's south-east corner. /p pSudanese from refugee camps make up about a quarter of the 12,000 United Nations-sponsored refugees the government brought in last year. /p pTamworth Mayor James Treloar had said [that] a majority of the 50,000 townsfolk were against accepting more Sudanese because those already living in the community had been in trouble with the police. /p pCouncillor Robert Schofield, who voted for the decision to be reversed, said [that] locals should take pity on the Africans. /p p'We're a wealthy country, and it's only five families, and the poor souls have got absolutely nothing,' he told local television. 'People are frightened of them because they are tall and black.' /p pOther Australian country towns have been immediately welcoming. strongThere are already 1,300 Sudanese in the Queensland town of Toowoomba, where Mayor Di Thorley urged townsfolk to imagine how they must appear to the new arrivals. /strong/p pstrong'How bizarre we must look from their eyes,' she said. 'We're a lot shorter. We'd most probably look all the same.'/strong /p pema href="http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21074537-5006009,00.html"Fr om the Sydney quot;Daily Telegraphquot;/a.../em/p pTAMWORTH'S Christian community has emerged as a major player in the campaign that led to the council rethinking its refusal to accept more refugees./p pstrongSt Peter's Anglican Church Reverend Ken Fenton said [that] while there had not been a quot;co-ordinated and concertedquot; effort by churches to quot;roll the councilquot;, a petition and letter-writing campaign played a major part in its change of heart on Tuesday. /strong/p pstrongMore than 1500 signatures and a raft of letters supporting more refugees settling in the town were collected by church groups, Mr Fenton said./strong/p pstrongquot; There has been some suggestion [that] the churches have organised to roll the council, quot; he said./strong/p pstrongquot; There hasn't been any sort of co-ordinated approach. There would be some who would say [that] the church should stay out of politics. I think a lot of people would say from Christian conviction we've got to care for people in need, even if it does change life as we know it./strong/p pstrongquot;I think [that] the church does have a lot to say in politics even though we don't want the church running politics.quot;/strong/p pstrongHe said [that] the change of heart was a quot;good recoveryquot; from a quot;rockyquot; month./strong/p pAustralia's country music capital has been embroiled in controversy since it refused a request by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs last month to accept more refugees as part of a humanitarian program./p pBut on Tuesday it agreed to meet with DIMA today [Thursday, Australian time] to discuss ways [that] the program could work in Tamworth./p pMayor James Treloar came under fire last month for what were perceived as quot;racistquot; comments when he said [that] the town was already struggling with the 15 Sudanese refugees it had./p pHe has since apologised – and yesterday [Wednesday] told emThe Daily Telegraph/em [that] he had been misunderstood. He said [that] it was not that he was against refugees, but rather the Federal Government's program as it stood./p pHe said [that] he had concerns about how refugees would cope when they arrived in Tamworth, particularly with settling in and educational and mental health needs./p pstrongquot;Council hasn't done a backflip and supported the program – council still does not support the program as it is currently structured, quot; Mr Treloar said./strong/p pstrongquot; What I did say was that there needs to be something tailor-made for Tamworth basically, and we're going to have to work with the department to get that tailor-made project for Tamworth.quot;/strong/p pHe added [that] it was now up to the town's volunteers and organisations to help run the program, which is supported by Federal Government funding./p pstrongquot; If our own volunteers and organisations don't put their hands up and say that (they will help), it won't work, quot; he said./strong/p pstrongFellow councillor Robert Schofield, who was one of three members of the nine-strong council to initially support the plan, said [that] he was happy to be quot;moving forwardquot;./strong/p
